Freda Elliot

It is with great sadness that the club informs you of the passing of one of its honorary members Freda Elliott.

The family of Freda Elliott have announced her passing at the age of 99. Freda was a distinguished Northern Irish international lawn bowler and a Commonwealth Games Gold Medallist, whose contribution to the sport spanned decades and generations.

Freda achieved international acclaim when she won gold in the women’s pairs at the 1986 Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh, a landmark achievement that remains a proud moment in Northern Ireland’s sporting history. Her success at the highest level reflected not only her exceptional talent but also her determination, discipline and love for the game.

Beyond her competitive achievements, Freda was widely regarded as a lifelong ambassador for lawn bowls. She was deeply committed to the development of the sport and was known for the time, encouragement and guidance she gave to others – particularly younger and emerging players. Many bowlers credit Freda’s quiet leadership, generosity of spirit and passion for bowls as influential in shaping their own involvement and progression within the sport.

Respected and admired throughout the bowling community, Freda was recognised not only for her skill and sporting success, but also for her warmth, sportsmanship and integrity. Her legacy extends far beyond medals and titles, living on through the many players she inspired and supported throughout her life.

The Elliott family have expressed their gratitude for the messages of sympathy received and would appreciate this news being shared appropriately within the bowling and sporting community. Further details can be provided on request.

Freda Elliott will be remembered as an outstanding sportswoman, a proud representative of Northern Ireland, and a true champion of the game she loved.
